Welcome to the the Make Higley Historic! blogspot! Your definitive source of Higley happenings - past, present and future.

Anyone who knows Higley is aware that its boundaries and residents have been quite elusive the last 100 years. This page has been created to bring together fellow Higleans, Gilbillies, San Tan-ites, travelers and friends who all have something to say about the history of this unique place.

Higley needs your voice! If you are interested in authoring posts for this community blog, we'd love to hear from you and the site administrator will get you set up.

Please feel free to email any photos you would like to share to makehigleyhistoric@gmail.com and we will add them to the page. And if you know of any older folks who may not be technologically savvy or speak only Spanish, let us know and we can arrange an interview so their stories are recorded as well.

We look forward to hearing from many and hope you all check in weekly for updates and new posts about our history and our efforts for recognition. Thank you kindly for all of your support in making Higley's historic value known!

What's Your Higley Story?

As mentioned in Gilbert's 1/10/09 East Valley Tribune - without government, Higley has moved along for the last 100 years as a "people's place." Commerce, education, communication and most importantly community has made Higley what it is and Higley wants your story! Your Friendly Higley Historians invite anyone who wants to share a glimmer of the past, present and future of Higley to comment to this post. Since we're chugging along with the past, here are some historical topics of interest that we're digging up, and feel free to add to the list. And don't be shy, we invite all to help us out with the present and future!

I attended Greenfield Elementary and our bus route took Williams Field from Gilbert rounding up the kids near Sharp's, Stewarts rodeo grounds and Rezzonico's then north on Greenfield where the Bradshaw kids were in the pecan groves (this house is now covered by the 202). I remember feeling so far from home when we had to occasionally swoop over to the Morrison Ranch farm houses and pick the kids up there.

We had a teacher whose son went to Higley Elementary, so they loaded up the Greenfield students and took us over there for a magic show that the older students put on. I loved field trips. I would look out the bus window and always wonder where everyone was going in their cars while us kids were at school. I remember that it was such a fun time, our morning at Higley Elementary, and I look back at it now, grateful that the teachers took the time to give us a new experience and the older kids practiced hard to wow us with their skills.

A lot has changed since them and hopefully with something other than endless fields to look at, bus rides won't seem long and far as they did back then:)

Correction - the trees on the Bradshaw property were pistachio trees and Bowen "misses that crazy orchard."

I heard it was common to name water stops for steam locomotives after railroad executives.

My DAD worked for MR.EARL C.RECKER around 1957.Large farm main roads were RECKER RD. and PECOS.My DAD loved his job.Our humble home was very comfortable even with the use of an outhouse. We attended HIGLEY SCHOOL later had to walk to RITTENHOUSE RD. To take a bus to C.H.S. We had the privilege of cleaning MRS.GERMAINS Beautiful home.I can still recall having lunch with both of them. One day she said "We would love to adopt you"I almost choked. They were very serious! A lovely couple. The following week I had to give them the bad news.My parents said "NO"
